Current Projects

Building a Stronger, More Sustainable Farm for Education & Community Impact

Our current animal area floods severely during heavy rains, making it unsafe and inaccessible for both animals and visitors. When we purchased the property, we didn’t realize the extent of the flooding issues, and now we need to grade and elevate the land to prevent future water damage. In addition to flooding, our farm faces extreme seasonal challenges—muddy, windy, and freezing conditions in winter, and excessive heat in the summer. These conditions are not only difficult for our animals but also limit farm visits and educational programs.

To provide a safe and comfortable environment for our animals year-round, we urgently need a barn that offers shelter from the elements and ensures proper animal care. The barn would also allow us to welcome more visitors, host farm experiences regardless of weather, and continue our educational mission year-round.

We need support, volunteers, and funding to bring these projects to life. Join us in making a difference!

Barn & Concrete Pad Construction

Our animals need safe, dry shelter year-round, especially during the rainy season. Currently, we lack adequate covered areas, making it difficult to keep our animals protected in extreme weather.

We are fundraising to:

  • Build a durable, all-weather barn for our livestock.
  • Install concrete pads to provide clean, dry spaces for animals to eat and rest.
  • Upgrade fencing and infrastructure to enhance animal safety and comfort.
  • Grade and elevate the land to prevent flooding and improve drainage.

Poultry Area Renovation

Our current poultry area floods during heavy rains, making it difficult to keep our chickens and ducks safe, dry, and comfortable. We need to redesign the space to ensure it remains functional and weather-resistant.

We are working to:

  • Rebuild coops with better insulation for year-round comfort.
  • Improve drainage & install better flooring to keep the area dry in winter and cool in summer.
  • Create raised walkways to allow for easy access and maintenance.

Sheep & Goat Pens & Playground Build

Our sheep and goats need stronger, safer pens and better shelter to keep them comfortable in all seasons. In addition to rebuilding their enclosures, we also want to create a goat playground to provide them with enrichment and exercise.
We are working to:

  • Rebuild fencing and shelters to ensure safety and durability.
  • Construct a goat playground with climbing structures for mental and physical stimulation.
  • Improve drainage in pen areas to keep animals dry and healthy.

Pig Area Improvements

Our pigs need a concrete pad and better enclosure to improve their comfort and overall health. Right now, the area can become muddy and hard to manage in rainy seasons. By providing a stable environment, we can enhance their well-being and ensure they thrive in a safe, dry space.
We are working to:

  • Install a concrete pad to keep the area dry and sanitary.
  • Upgrade fencing to ensure security and better management.
  • Create a more structured feeding area for efficiency.

Edible Landscaping: Mini Orchard & Vineyard Development

We currently have over 100 trees and bushes on the farm and want to replace them with an edible landscape that provides food for both our farm and our community. Instead of ornamental landscaping, we envision a space that produces fresh fruits, berries, and nuts year-round.
We are working to:

  • Transition our existing trees and bushes into an edible landscape.
  • Plant a diverse mini orchard with fruit and nut trees.
  • Establish a mini vineyard for sustainable grape production.
  • Improve soil health and irrigation to support long-term growth.

Irrigation & Land Development for Future Farming & Community Garden

We have two acres of unused land in our back lot that floods due to poor drainage. This land serves as a natural drainage area for the neighborhood, but right now, it’s inaccessible. We want to elevate it, install irrigation, and transform it into a productive farming space.

We are working to:

  • Grade and elevate the land to prevent excessive flooding.
  • Install irrigation to support farming and gardening.
  • Fence the space to keep it secure and organized.

Explore community gardening opportunities to make the space accessible to the public.

Completion of Demonstration Garden

Our demonstration garden is designed to teach visitors about growing their own food, sustainable gardening practices, and how to grow unique crops.

We are working to:

  • Expand planting areas to include more vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers.
  • Create educational signage to explain different gardening techniques.
  • Host workshops and interactive classes in the space.

Build a Show Arena for Livestock Training & Demonstrations

We are working on constructing a show arena where we can practice handling livestock, train animals, and offer livestock education experiences to visitors.

This space will:

  • Provide a safe area to work with animals and train youth.
  • Host livestock demonstrations and workshops.
  • Offer hands-on experiences for those interested in learning more about large animal care.

LONG TERM GOAL

Build a Fully Equipped Barn

While we are working on smaller improvements at the farm, our long-term vision includes constructing a large, fully equipped barn that will serve as:

  • A shelter for livestock during extreme weather.
  • A central hub for farm education programs and community workshops.
  • A space for animal care, veterinary visits, and training sessions.

Future Vision

Start a Nonprofit & Build Our Board of Directors

We want to expand Zankofa Farm’s mission beyond our property and into the community. One of our biggest future goals is to form a nonprofit organization focused on agricultural education, food access, and sustainability.

Our nonprofit will:

  • Provide free or low-cost farm education to underserved communities.
  • Expand our volunteer and internship programs.
  • Develop scholarship opportunities for students interested in agriculture.
