Honoring the past.Cultivating the future. Feeding the community.

Our farm is not just a place to grow food; it’s a space to reconnect with the land, learn hands-on, and experience agriculture firsthand. We raise livestock, grow specialty crops, and provide hands-on agricultural education, all while fighting to keep historical farming knowledge alive for future generations

about us

Welcome to Zankofa Farm

Zankofa Farm is more than just a farm—it’s a legacy in motion. Built on generations of agricultural knowledge, we blend traditional farming with hands-on education to preserve the past while growing the future. Our name is inspired by Sankofa, a powerful Ghanaian concept that means "go back and get it." It reminds us that to move forward, we must learn from those who came before us.

For Idara, the founder of Zankofa Farm, this mission is deeply personal. She grew up learning from her parents, who were taught by their parents before them. Farming was their way of life, their source of nourishment, and their connection to the land. But after losing her mother at 16, then her grandparents, and later her father, Idara realized that she had to be the one to keep this knowledge alive—not just for her children, but for the next generation.

Zankofa Farm is her way of honoring her ancestors while creating opportunities for others to experience real, hands-on farming. Every seed planted, every animal raised, every lesson taught here is part of a bigger story—one of resilience, heritage, and the power of community.

who we are?

Why "Zankofa"?

Zankofa Farm is more than just a place to grow food—it’s a philosophy, a legacy, and a bridge between the past and the future. Our name is inspired by Sankofa, a powerful Akan word from Ghana that means "go back and get it." It represents the idea that we must learn from our past to build a better future. This belief is at the heart of everything we do at Zankofa Farm.

We look back to honor the agricultural wisdom of our ancestors—Black and Latino farmers who have historically fed our communities, tour techniques include indigenous growing techniques that respected the land long before modern industrial farming.

We carry those traditions forward by teaching the next generation how to grow food, raise animals ethically, and reconnect with the land. Just as Sankofa teaches us to reclaim lost knowledge, Zankofa Farm is here to revive and share farming practices that nourish both people and the earth

🌾 Services We Provide

At Zankofa Farm, we provide a variety of educational, agricultural, and community-focused services designed to reconnect people with farming, sustainability, and food production. Whether you're seeking hands-on learning, unique farm experiences, or fresh produce, we have something for everyone.

What Makes Zankofa Farm Unique?

  • Urban Roots, Rural Passion

We come from the Bay Area, bringing an urban perspective to rural farming. Our journey into agriculture was driven by a lifelong dream to connect people with their food sources.

  • Minority-Owned & Culturally Inclusive

Less than 1% of farmers in the U.S. are Black, and even fewer raise livestock. As a Black- and Latino-owned farm, we are breaking barriers and making farming more accessible and welcoming for all. Se habla Español.

  • A True Farm Experience

Both Crops & Livestock – Many farms focus on just crops or just animals—we do both! We raise over 20 varieties of chickens, ducks, turkeys, peacocks, guinea hens, goats, sheep, pigs, and more, while also growing a diverse range of produce, including heirloom vegetables and rare specialty crops.

  • A Farm That Gives Back

    We don’t just grow food

we share it. Most of what we grow is donated to families, schools, and organizations to help improve food access in our community.

  • Unforgettable Experiences

Our farm is a place for hands-on learning. We host workshops, educational programs, and farm tours to make agriculture fun, engaging, and accessible to all.

  • Our Home is Your Learning Space

Zankofa Farm isn’t just a business

it’s our home and way of life. We welcome visitors with open arms, but we ask that you respect the land, the animals, and the hard work that goes into running a farm.

Our Mission

Educating Through Hands-On Agriculture

At Zankofa Farm, our mission is to empower youth and families through hands-on experiences in animal husbandry and sustainable agriculture. We are committed to bridging the gap between urban communities and farming, providing meaningful learning opportunities where children can care for animals, understand food production, and build life skills.

As a minority-owned, family-run farm, we prioritize:

  • Livestock education and 4-H mentorship
  • Providing urban youth with hands-on agricultural experiences
  • Creating a welcoming space for all to learn about animal care and sustainability
  • Regenerative farming practices that respect the land and animals
  • Giving back to the community through food donations and mentorship

Did you know:

Less than 1% of U.S. farmers are Black and only 4% are Latino. Even fewer in either group raise livestock. Zankofa Farm is here to change that. By breaking barriers in agriculture, we provide opportunities for individuals and families from all backgrounds to engage in livestock care, farming, and self-sufficiency.

Our Vision

Breaking Barriers in Agriculture

We envision a future where more young people, especially from urban and underrepresented backgrounds, have the opportunity to engage in agriculture. Through interactive farm visits, educational workshops, and hands-on training, we want to:
